We know car buying can feel like a daunting process. This guide will help you feel comfortable walking into any dealership.
Helpful checklists:
Steps to take before visiting a dealership:
- Check your credit score - This is not necessary but can save you time at the dealership. If you know what you can afford ahead of time, it can help narrow down your search for the perfect vehicle.
- Make a list of what features you're looking for your new vehicle to have.
- Look at your options online- It’s helpful to search online to have an idea of the different vehicles that suit your needs. Every dealership has a website that will tell you the different features of each model.
- Find a dealership you feel comfortable with.
Items to bring with you to the dealership:
- Valid Driver's License
- Paystub
- Proof of residence (Phone bill, or electric bill, or rental contract etc.)
- Proof of insurance
- Current registration for your trade-in vehicle (If applicable)
- Title for your trade-in vehicle if its paid off
- Valid checkbook, credit card, or cash for down payment
What questions to ask your dealership salesperson:
- Start by telling your salesperson the features and price point you're looking for. Be as specific as possible.
- What features does the vehicle have? (Make sure it matches what your looking for)
- What is the gas mileage of the vehicle city/hwy?
- Can you break down the price point for me?
- Can I see the invoice price?
- Do you have any comparison models that I can look at that meet what I’m looking for?
- If you're looking to purchase a used vehicle, ask for the mileage, vehicle history report, and if there has been a 3rd party inspection done on the vehicle.
Questions to ask yourself before choosing your vehicle:
- Does this vehicle meet most or all of the features I’m looking for?
- Am I happy with my choice?
- Does its gas mileage meet my commuting needs?
- Does it have enough room?
- Does this vehicle meet all of my driving needs?
If you answered no to any of these, ask your salesperson to see some comparison models.
Don’t feel like you need to memorize any of this. Feel free to download this guide and bring it with you to the dealership. Remember, you can always stop your salesperson to ask for clarification about any of the terminology they may use, or steps in the process.
